&Dedication; a webmaster's love
why ky?
I like to call this page more as the "confession" page, because I'll be frank - I wasn't as obsessed about this boy as many expect me to be.Let me be blunt: initially, I only was interested at Ky because I loved his seiyuu. At the time, I was researching like crazy on Takeshi Kusao's roles because I loved the game Tales of Phantasia. I considered buying the game after I saw a review of it on the show "X-Play". Ky didn't seem to attract me at that point - just his voice. I guess I'm considered an amateur fan in a sense that I got into the series pretty late.
I don't even play him while playing the games, as you can tell with the lack of good information on the in-game section. I prefer playing characters like Bridget, Jam, or Millia. In fact, I'm such a crappy Ky player that I only really use him to complete the story mode or get some images from mission mode. Ky only seemed like a pretty face to me, and someone to poke fun at his obsessions with justice and Sol. I remembered my exact words when I saw him "Yadda yadda justice yadda yadda EVIL IS BAD yadda yadda". I was more into the others for their originality.
Being addicted to the engaging plot, I started reading the manga (er, looking I should say), listening to the music albums and drama cds, and buying books and games. As Ky participates in the majority of these releases,I should say that somehow he sparked into me.
His strong will contrasts his rather young self. Though he seems to have it all - a good job, respect, possibly a lot of money, comfort - we can see he is not satisfied with this. If Ky was an adult, we would criticize him for his black-and-white world. But then we remember... Ky was a mere child, yet he holds a huge burden in the Crusades. His ideals are the result of that environment he has lived. By wearing the Holy Order outfit even after years of retirement, it feels as though the memories of the past have never been lifted. Why he continues to pursuit Sol, why he still holds faith that all Gears are evil. somehow, he has yet to move on to a free world, as if his mind is still a child. Despite the "perfection" he carries, Ky is a suffering character. As a veteran, he suffers from loss of allies, betrayal, and his own insecurities about his ideals.
He's stubborn as hell when it comes to his goals, but unlike most stubborn people, he is willing to learn from mistakes. Despite killing Gears, he offers Dizzy and Solaria a home (and marries one in Overture). Despite his resentment with Sol, he thanks him for saving his life when he deserves it. Despite being an enemy of the police, he is rather friendly with Johnny. He even is forced to go against his own government at certain times. He's dynamic in some shape or way. That alone attracts me.
Ky's personality also reminds me of myself. He just can't say 'no' to a person in need, a rather stupid, but noble act of kindness. He is intelligent (okay, maybe I'm going too far with that) and mature for his age. And he loves collecting tea cups, a hobby you wouldn't expect from a boy. For some reason, that concept was just sheer awing.
Consequently, I can't deny that Ky's bishounen look also makes him a bit lovable to me. I mean, appearance also makes an effect, in my opinion, no matter what people say about "don't judge a book by it's cover". More importantly, I'm quite interested on how he appears as a foil with Sol.
Ky definitely has his flaws. He isn't a top tier character, he makes plenty of bad choices, and isn't the most interesting to listen to due to the fact that he often talks with himself. But that's what makes him more dynamic. His lack of understanding and naiveté helps progress the plot. He suffers a little bit every day, then proceeds to heal the wound. It makes him slowly change over the course of time.
There is so much more I wish to say about him, though I am unable to express it with words alone. So, to show my love, I made a fansite and tried to go in-depth as much as possible with this character that most people don't achieve. It's more of an expression than anything else.
