turnabout courtroom
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a visual novel/adventure for the Nintendo DS that was originally remade from Japan's Gameboy Advanced games. The first game had such impressive sales that CAPCOM decided to make sequels in additional: "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All" and "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations". Aside from the games, plenty of merchandise such as a manga, plushies, stickers, etc. was sold to share the glory of the series. As of now, CAPCOM is working on a new game, though no information is given aside from that.
The games take place in several years into the future (although the technology is still the same to our time, perhaps even older). Crime has increased in an alarming rate, and the courts were always filled with a large caseload. As a result, cases needed to end swiftly. A maximum of three days was given for a case to be finished. A case may be looked over afterward, but only within the time frame of 15 years. After 15 years, the case is no longer alive. The rules of the laws are also very different from the United States' court system, as apparently any person is guilty until proven innocent. (It is important to note that this game is not a real court room sim.)
The player takes the role of Phoenix Wright, a rookie defense attorney who must prove his client's innocence from mostly premeditated murders in several episodes. The theme of the series is that Phoenix's clients are always seemingly guilty, and when brought on trial, they look even more suspicious. Suddenly, a miracle occurs, and Phoenix makes a "turnabout" to win the case. Often, the true criminal is revealed to be a witness, so Phoenix must try to ruin their alibi. Catchphrases embedded into the player's mind include OBJECTION!, HOLD IT!, and TAKE THAT!
Inspired by an incident from his youth, Phoenix always dreamed of defending people in the courtroom. He was then hired by Mia Fey, an exceptionally wise and beautiful defense attorney. After he won his first case, his boss was murdered, and her younger sister, Maya Fey, was assumed guilty of the crime. Trusting this girl, Phoenix chose to defend Maya. Phoenix then uncovers Blue Corp, an organization which Mia was trying to incriminate for their use of blackmail over political figures. He then was brought to trial against the "demonic" prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. Though at first everything was against him, Phoenix always triumphs in the end. Under the last request of her sister, Maya decides to work and live with Phoenix. With her friendly support as well as channeling abilities, Maya assists Phoenix whenever she can.
As the cases move on, Phoenix makes more friends, as well as enemies. They share moments as well as pasts together. And Phoenix slowly develops to an ace attorney who overcame all obstacles.
The game ends with "Trials and Tribulation", but the success of the series created a new game featuring an attorney named Apollo Justice, as well as a spinoff (or new series?) starring Edgeworth.
