protector of the throne
Detective Dick Gumshoe is a lovable guy who just keeps making mistakes. Though his investigation
is vital for Edgeworth's cases, his clumsy work leaves plenty of holes in his case. As a result, Edgeworth frequently deducts from his paycheck to
compensate. With at least one penalty per case, the poor man is forced to live a life of poverty: in an old apartment, wearing old, worn clothes, eating
mostly noodles. Despite that, there is no other detective who would happily be of service to Edgeworth. And whether Edgeworth likes it or not, he simply
can't pick someone other than Gumshoe.
Possibly my favorite relationship from this series is the connection between Edgeworth and Gumshoe. Our little private eye is completely, and utterly devoted to Edgeworth, no matter how much the prosecutor hurts him. Meanwhile, Edgeworth is always reprimanding him and jabbing sarcastic remarks about his performance. This one-sided worship brings plenty of laughs at Gumshoe's expense.
Phoenix You owe him that much! After all, it's your fault his salary is so low!
Edgeworth H-How's it my fault?
Phoenix And look, if you're going to buy the guy lunch, at least get him something decent, OK? Gumshoe practically lives on pasta and noodles already.
Edgeworth Well I did order some extra parmesan cheese on top. He was crying tears of joy as he dug into it. It was quite moving.
Phoenix (...All you have to do is give the poor guy a raise...)
For some reason (explained in Investigations), Gumshoe has promised to be loyal for "Mr. Edgeworth" forever. He's constantly alarmed about him, especially after he learned a bit about his dark past. He feels that if he isn't there for him, Edgeworth will suffer alone. Plus, he knows that deep inside is the good side to Edgeworth. Gumshoe swears to forever protect him. Whenever someone even dares insult him, he passionately defends his honor. He's incessantly praises his job and never criticizes him. Should his life be in danger (twice), he will even endanger his career for him.
Phoenix We can't do that. If someone found out...
Ema They wouldn't let you off the hook with another lost item report!
Gumshoe Look at me. It's no secret I'm already out of the loop. After all, I'm friends with Mr. Edgeworth. Depending on how this case turns out, I may already be as good as terminated...
Phoenix (What...?)
Gumshoe So at least let me do this... for Mr. Edgeworth's sake!
In reconcile, Edgeworth also trusts the detective to give him his results. He realized that though Gumshoe is a goofball, he will overcome both menial and dangerous tasks for his sake. When Edgeworth took his dramatic absense, he only called Gumshoe to know of his whereabouts. He also trusted him to keep tabs on Phoenix's case, and even deliver some evidence as assistance. He's his personal sidekick, but deep down, Gumshoe is the closest thing he had a "friend", before being reunited with Phoenix.
Edgeworth Oh yes... He brought me some information, it seems.
Ema Really? Was it helpful?
Edgeworth Apparently, a new French restaurant is opening near here. I think he was trying to console me, somehow.
Phoenix (Er, I think the report is on the other side, Edgeworth...)
